With over 25 years of experience in the precision machining of Vespel material, many of our customers at Plastic Products, Inc. have come to rely on our expertise when assisting with their design components for new applications. The Vespel family of polymers encompasses a variety of engineered resins that are designed to withstand extreme temperature applications. With their durability and resistance to corrosion and chemical wear, many Vespel materials are used as suitable alternatives to metals such as aluminum.

We were awarded this project by an aerospace defense customer who contacted us regarding the machining characteristics of Vespel SP-1, which is a polyimide engineered resin. The customer was seeking technical information regarding the material properties and machinability for a collar shaft application. We were able to provide the material manufacturer the data needed for the customer to determine the viability of Vespel SP-1 for their specific application, saving development time. Collaborating with customers early on in the design process allows us to assist the customer in designing components that can be machined with optimal efficiency while still meeting all performance specifications.

This collar shaft has an outer diameter of 1.5" and is machined on a CNC lathe to tolerances as tight as ±0.0001". We machined 20 of these components with a turnaround time of 3 days, according to the customer's scheduling needs.
